Migrators & Fall Colors of the Seely Swan
@ Join trip leader Darcy Thomas for this day-long trip that will take us through the Seeley-Swan Corridor to view fall colors and look for migrating birds. Western larch will be at their peak color, giving us breathtaking views of these golden beauties and providing a nice backdrop to the pristine lakes we will pass along the way. The trip falls squarely during peak autumn migration, enabling us to see an exceptional mix of migratory waterfowl, resident raptors, and forest species, including staging swans, cranes, and diving ducks preparing to head south. We will make several stops along the way, including the Swan River National Wildlife Refuge and the Swan Valley Connection Center, a welcoming, community-driven conservation and education hub. We will stop at the Mission Mountains Mercantile ("the Merc") to purchase lunch or coffee and other goodies for the drive. Other stops along the way may include the Condon Loop Road and Elk Creek, where we might be lucky to spot Northern Pygmy Owls, elk, or bear, and Summit Lake Access to look for moose, Common Loons, and Horned Grebes. Our trip will culminate just west of the town of Seeley Lake with a visit to "Gus," the largest western larch tree in North America, and potentially the world, at the James Girard Memorial Grove. Lunch will be enjoyed along the way. This will be a 190-mile roundtrip (yes, you read that correctly!) composed mostly of driving with some short walks. Plan to carpool and pitch in to help your driver with the cost of gasoline. Bring binoculars and dress for changeable weather. The trip is limited to 12 participants.
