Fire in the Flathead: Local History and Friction Fire Workshop
Celebrate the winter solstice by making fire the old-fashioned way! And we mean, really old-fashioned. Join us at the Bigfork Library for an afternoon of fire-making, storytelling and local history. Longtime wildland firefighter, forester, FVCC Forest Management Instructor and former Bigfork Fire Chief, Rick Trembath will share stories of fire in the Flathead Valley and its role in shaping our landscapes and communities. Then join Lena Olson, local artist, educator and founder of Camas Folk School, to try your hand at the ancient art of friction fire! Learn to use a traditional bow drill, discover the science behind making fire with sticks, and see if you can coax a glowing ember to life.
